The Financial Literacy Australia Awards have recognised Horizon Credit Union with a highly commended award in the small program category.

The local grown financial institution has been working with the National Theatre for Children (NTC) to deliver 19 fully produced, live theatre performances to 4000 student in 10 schools on the South Coast.

The 25 minute performances by professional actors use comedy and an adventure story to teach students all about money, its uses and how they can save.

The performances are supplemented with student workbooks filled with activities and educational games, teacher guides and interactive digital learning materials such as Horizon’s online children’s webpage “Savings Squad”.

Chief executive Jon Stanfield said it was great to be recognised for the program that was all about giving back to the community.

“We exist for the benefit of our members,” Mr Stanfield said.

“Our main aim is to help members manage their money better.”

The program will continue in 2016. Horizon directors Glenda Papac and Maree Kerr oversee Horizon’s community engagement which is coordinated by marketing manager Kim Morris.
