South Coast Students Cash in on Financial Literacy

Illawarra, Shoalhaven and Far South Coast primary school students will learn crucial financial literacy skills during June thanks to Horizon Credit Union and The National Theatre for Children (NTC). The organisations have joined together to deliver Showdown at Two Bob Billabong to schools across the regions at no cost. The tour begins on Monday 15th June and will visit schools in Albion Park, Thirroul, Austinmer, Nowra, Bega and Merimbula.

“We’re thrilled to be in a position to give back to the community by sponsoring these educational programs for children’s financial literacy. One of the things that set us apart from other financial institutions is that we exist for the benefit of our members. Our main aim is to help them manage their money better. Establishing good savings habits at a young age is a priceless skill that can be carried through to adulthood” said Horizon CEO Jon Stanfield.

Showdown at Two Bob Billabong is a twenty five minute performance delivered live into schools by two professional actors and uses comedy and an exciting adventure story to teach students all about what is money, the uses of money, why we should save and how we can save. The content of the show is curriculum aligned while the format is theatrical, energetic and fun. The information is supplemented by student workbooks filled with activities and educational games, teacher guides to be used in the classroom and interactive digital learning materials that reinforce the educational points, all of which are included free of charge.

The thorough nature of the multiplatform program is the result of time-tested experience. Tobias Benn, the Managing Director of NTC Australia explains. “We’ve been operating in the USA for over 35 years and our Australian team has 15 years of local experience together educating millions of students,” he says. “A huge part of our success is the fact that when kids laugh, they learn so much more willingly and enthusiastically and can’t wait to get home and share what they learned. It’s a way for our sponsor to spread these important messages into the greater community.”
